Leed Certification

C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital is nationally recognized for excellence in pediatric and maternity care, research, and education. As one of the nation’s leading pediatric health care centers, Mott is equally committed to environmental stewardship—delivering outstanding care for newborns, children, and pregnant women while minimizing our environmental impact.

Designed and built to meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, the hospital incorporates innovative and environmentally responsible features. In April 2012, Mott earned LEED® Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, a prestigious recognition of sustainable strategies that improve energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor air quality, and resource stewardship.

Key green features include:

  • Green Roof: A living roof planted with drought-resistant sedum that filters rainfall, improves insulation, reduces paved surfaces, and is expected to last twice as long as a conventional roof.
  • Recycled Materials: 93% of materials from the construction site were recycled, including over 200 tons of concrete and asphalt.
  • No-Wax Floors: Durable, rubber-based flooring that is PVC- and chlorine-free, reducing maintenance and improving indoor air quality.
  • Sustainable Wood: 84.6% of wood used meets Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification standards.
  • Low-Emission Materials: Carpets, paints, adhesives, and composite woods chosen for low emissions to protect indoor air quality.
  • Biodiesel-Powered Construction Equipment: Reducing environmental impact during construction.
  • HEPA Filtration: Hospital-wide high-efficiency filtration to protect immuno-compromised and high-risk patients.

Through these efforts, Mott Children’s Hospital blends world-class clinical care with a deep commitment to creating a healthier environment for patients, families, and the community.
