    • At University of Michigan Health, our Placenta Accreta Spectrum team provides specialized delivery care for pregnancies complicated by abnormal placental growth into or beyond the uterine wall, which places patients at high risk for life-threatening blood loss after childbirth. Placenta accreta may develop in pregnancies following certain uterine surgeries, most commonly cesarean section. To safeguard the patient, this often requires hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) or additional procedures after delivery.

    We offer high-quality imaging and coordination of complex, trauma-informed care around delivery. This may include cutting-edge tools such as REBOA, an intravascular balloon catheter for management of trauma and major bleeding, which can be utilized in the care of placenta accreta spectrum to slow down blood flow to control postpartum bleeding.

    Many of our patients travel significant distances to our hospital. We actively collaborate with the patient’s referring doctor to ensure that care maximizes both safety and convenience. We believe in the importance of providing clear, evidence-based information and support to families faced with a high-risk birth experience.
