Psychiatric Emergency Service
The Psychiatric Emergency Service (PES) at U-M Health provides 24/7 emergency and urgent walk-in evaluations, as well as crisis phone services, for individuals experiencing psychiatric emergencies. Our dedicated team is committed to offering patient-centered, evidence-based care in a safe, respectful and inclusive environment.
Our Approach
PES is a program of the University of Michigan Health Department of Psychiatry. It supports adults in psychiatric crises and, when necessary, assesses the need for inpatient care for children.

Services
Some of the services we offer include:
- Psychiatric assessments and crisis interventions
- Referrals to inpatient facilities if required
- Share mental health treatment resources and referrals
- While U-M Health has limited inpatient psychiatry beds, we coordinate hospital care if needed, often through external facilities.
