What is the APR-DRG Case Mix Index?
APR-DRG (All Patient Refined Diagnostic Related Group) is a classification system that assesses resource intensity (nursing ratios, equipment needs, surgical interventions) and risk of mortality to each inpatient stay. Numerous factors are considered – medical complexity, diagnoses, surgical procedures, etc. – to assign both an APR-DRG classification and a severity score between 1 (minor) and 4 (extreme).
To arrive at the CMI (case mix index), severity scores are averaged across the patient population. Hospitals with a CMI of 1.0 have an average severity level. As this index rises, it indicates increased patient acuity and resource intensity.
