What is Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS)?
Lower urinary tract symptoms refer to a group of urinary problems related to how the bladder stores and empties urine. These symp toms are common and may affect men and women, often increasing with age. LUTS can result from conditions involving the prostate, bladder, nervous system, or urinary tract.

What are the symptoms of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms?
LUTS may include problems with urine storage, urine flow, or both. Common symptoms include:
- Frequent urination
- Urgent need to urinate
- Waking at night to urinate
- Weak urine stream
- Difficulty starting urination
- Straining to urinate
- Intermittent stream
- A feeling of incomplete bladder emptying
- Urinary leakage
How are Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms diagnosed?
Your doctor will evaluate LUTS by asking about your symptoms, how often they occur, and how much they affect your daily life. A physical exam and urine testing are commonly performed.
Additional testing may be recommended to assess bladder function, prostate size, urine flow, or residual urine in the bladder after voiding.
How are Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms treated?
