Hematuria (Blood in the Urine)
What is hematuria?
Hematuria is the presence of blood in the urine. It may be visible to the eye or detected only through urine testing. Hematuria can originate anywhere in the urinary tract, including the kidneys, bladder, ureters, or prostate, and can be caused by both benign and serious conditions.

What are the symptoms of hematuria?
Hematuria may occur with or without other symptoms. When symptoms are present, they may include:
- Pink, red, or brown-colored urine
- Pain or burning with urination
- Frequent urination
- Urgency to urinate
- Flank or abdominal pain
Some patients have hematuria detected only on routine urine testing and feel otherwise well.
How is hematuria diagnosed?
Your doctor will diagnose hematuria by reviewing your medical history, performing a physical exam, and ordering urine tests. Imaging studies of the kidneys and urinary tract may be performed to look for stones, tumors, or other abnormalities.
In many cases, cystoscopy is recommended to directly examine the bladder and urethra to identify the source of bleeding.
How is hematuria treated?
Treatment depends on the underlying cause of hematuria. Some causes require no treatment, while others may require medication, procedures, or surgery. Identifying the cause of hematuria is essential to guide appropriate care and rule out serious conditions.
