Classes
Classes are led by our Diabetes Education Program staff. The team consists of certified diabetes educator nurses and dietitians. We have expertise in diabetes devices, with certification in training, prep and self-management for insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors (CGM). Our dietitians hold certificates of training in adult weight management by the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
The Flexible Management Classes (or Intensive Management Classes) are designed for adults with type 1 diabetes. Four evening sessions, two and a half hours long, are held every other month. This class is recommended either for adults who are newly diagnosed with diabetes, or for adults who would like to obtain the most current information to help with their diabetes management, as well as for adults who are interested in an insulin pump. Our goal for this class is to give you tools and suggestions that you will be able to utilize in dealing with your diabetes. The information in this program is tailored to what is important to you.
As an attendee, you are encouraged to share your thoughts, concerns and questions with us during the classes. This class is a prerequisite for those interested in pumps. In the "Intensive Management" class you will learn what insulin pumps are, what is involved in starting a pump, how to manage emergencies and more. After you have completed the class, the diabetes education team will work with you personally to prepare you for an insulin pump. We will coordinate ordering and provide education and follow-up to help you become a successful “pumper”. Please call 734-998-2475 for more information or to register for the classes.
The "Living with Diabetes" classes are designed for people with type 2 diabetes. Four sessions, two and a half hours long, are held each month. This class is recommended for people who are newly diagnosed with diabetes and for those who would like the most up-to-date information on diabetes management. Our goal is to give you tools and suggestions that you will be able to implement in your daily life. The information is tailored to what is important to you, and we encourage you to share your thoughts, concerns and questions with us during classes. Please call 734-998-2475 for more information or to register for the classes.
The gestational diabetes class is scheduled through the Adult Diabetes Education Program. It has been designed for pregnant women who have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes. You will learn what gestational diabetes is, how it is diagnosed, and how to treat it with meal planning and glucose monitoring. The purpose of the education is to help keep a mother's blood sugar near the target range to lower the risks to both mom and baby. Learn more and register for the Gestational Diabetes Class through the Adult Diabetes Education Program at (734) 998-2475.
Support Groups
Many have found it helpful to attend a support group, where they can meet others who share their experiences. You can gain support and understanding, trade tips and ideas, improve your diabetes self-care, and focus on issues that are important to you. We offer several free support groups for adults and seniors living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, as well as those who deal with complications from diabetes. The groups are led by our program staff and other affiliated U-M Health staff, such as certified diabetes educator nurses and dietitians. Our support groups are free and open to the public, including patients who receive their healthcare outside the U-M Health. Family members and other support people are also encouraged to attend.
