Sleep Disorders Program
Sleep Disorders Program
Are you having difficulty with sleep or alertness? Consider being seen at the U-M Health Sleep Disorders Center:
- One of the oldest, largest, and most widely recognized academic sleep programs in the U.S.
- About 10,000 clinic visits and 10,000 sleep studies or home sleep apnea tests every year
- A multidisciplinary group of sleep physicians – each with background in internal medicine, neurology, pediatrics, otolaryngology, psychiatry, or pulmonary medicine – and additional clinical team members with specialized expertise in sleep health
We specialize in sleep. And we know that most sleep problems can be eliminated, improved or controlled.
Our Approach
After a referral from your physician, you will see one of our sleep medicine providers before you have a sleep study. Sleep studies are tests that measure how well you sleep and how your body responds to sleep problems. Our sleep technologists are highly experienced and know how to make the testing process comfortable for you. We also offer home testing. When we evaluate you, we can determine if home testing is an option.
We work with patients to make sure their treatments work. And we follow up with patients whose primary care physicians are not familiar with sleep disorders or who want a sleep specialist to be involved.
All of our laboratories use American Academy of Sleep Medicine guidelines. The AASM accredits each of our sites. This recognition helps to demonstrate that we provide the highest quality of care in sleep medicine.
Appointment Information
Call 734-936-9068 to schedule a consult with one of our specialists. If you cannot keep your appointment, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can give the appointment time to someone else. We prefer cancellations no later than 48 hours in advance.
Bring your insurance card. And, if you are currently using a CPAP/BiPAP machine, please bring the data card to your clinic visit. If you are undergoing a home sleep study, please make sure to bring with you the data card that is recording the information on the unit you are using.
Services
Conditions
There are almost 100 sleep disorders, and we treat all of them, including:
Central Sleep Apnea
Circadian Rhythm Sleep Disorders
Excessive Sleepiness
Insomnia
Narcolepsy
Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Parasomnia
Periodic Leg Movements
Restless Leg Syndrome
Sleep Studies
Sleep studies are the only way to find out if a person has a sleep disorder. They are a painless test that monitors body functions such as airflow, brain waves, heart rate, leg movements, pulse oximetry and breathing during sleep.
We conduct the tests in a comfortable hotel-like setting. A well-trained sleep specialist technician will talk with you about the study, answer any questions, place sleep-testing electrodes on your body, and be available all night should you need anything.
We can also provide in-home testing to qualified individuals.
- Mail-in program – HSAT devices are mailed with instructions who are unable to come in for curbside pickup. Upon completion, HSAT devices are mailed back in prepaid packet
- Curbside pickup – HSAT devices with instructions are picked and dropped off with patients staying in their vehicle
Eligible Candidates
The sleep medicine physician determines the best candidates for an in-home sleep study. This test is not medically appropriate for every patient. We typically choose patients who are confident and capable of turning the equipment on and off and hooking themselves up to the electrodes. Patients who have recently had a stroke, cardiac or pulmonary issues, or who are morbidly obese, are not candidates for home testing.
About Us
Some private companies send out home test equipment in the mail to patients, and then the patients mail the equipment back. But this requires the patient to apply the leads and do everything on their own. With our program, you would come to the Sleep Lab for a 30-minute appointment. We will put your electronic leads on and provide you with specific instructions. Then you will go home to do the test. We also give you troubleshooting information. And, of course, you can always call our Sleep Laboratory 24/7 with questions.
After you've finished using the machine, you simply return it to the Sleep Lab so the sleep medicine physician can interpret the results.

Results
After the physician interprets the results, he or she will be able to prescribe the appropriate treatment. If there is a problem with the testing, we will work with you to determine the cause.
One of our sleep medicine physicians will score and interpret your study within 7-10 days. If your physician is part of our Sleep Disorders Clinic, we will notify you by letter to explain that we placed an order for CPAP or BiPAP equipment with a Durable Medical Equipment (DME) company near your home. The DME company will contact you within 1 to 2 weeks after we send the order to schedule an appointment for you to pick up your equipment.
If your physician is not with the U-M Sleep Disorders Clinic, you should contact your physician to obtain your results and order your equipment.
The DME company will train you in how to use and take care of the CPAP equipment.
