Weight Management Clinic (Pediatric)
Weight management is an important part of your child’s health, and taking steps to help your child manage his or her weight is an important part of providing them the tools they’ll need for healthy behaviors throughout their life. C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and the Pediatric Weight Management Clinic team is committed to providing your family with the treatment, education, support and resources needed for your child to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. We have a long-standing track record of innovative weight loss programs for children and teens.
Our Approach
The U-M weight loss model uses a family-based behavioral approach, designed for patients 2-18 years old with a BMI at or above the 85th percentile.
All patients referred to the Pediatric Weight Management Clinic will have an initial evaluation with a pediatric psychologist to understand how mood, behavior and lifestyle may be factoring into the individual’s current weight status and provide a foundation for developing a preliminary treatment plan. Each patient also meets with a registered dietitian certified in Child and Adolescent Weight Management to provide tailored dietary recommendations.
Our team will work with your family to determine an appointment schedule that meets your needs. Families will learn and implement evidence-based behavior change strategies including self-monitoring, goal setting, environmental control, reinforcement for goal achievement and problem solving to promote a healthy weight and lifestyle. Our pediatric psychologist will also treat specific maladaptive eating behaviors if present, such as hoarding, hiding or sneaking food, excessive preoccupation with food and night eating syndrome.
Your child’s primary care physician is a critical part of your family’s journey. Our team will work with your primary care provider to perform any necessary routine health care evaluation, manage any related medical conditions, and determine any physical activity limitations. He or she will be kept up to date about your child’s progression through the program so that your family can continue receiving fully integrated care.
