Elevated PSA
Elevated PSA
What is an elevated PSA?
PSA, or prostate-specific antigen, is a protein produced by the prostate gland and measured with a blood test. PSA levels can rise for many reasons, including normal prostate growth with aging, inflammation or infection of the prostate, recent urinary procedures, or prostate cancer. An elevated PSA does not necessarily mean cancer is present, but it may signal the need for further evaluation.

What are the symptoms of an elevated PSA?
An elevated PSA itself does not cause symptoms. The purpose of a PSA test is to identify patients who might have prostate cancer. Most patients with early stage prostate cancer do not have symptoms related to their cancer.
How is an elevated PSA diagnosed?
Your doctor will evaluate an elevated PSA by reviewing your PSA level over time, your age, medical history, and any urinary symptoms. A physical exam, including a digital rectal exam, is often performed to assess the prostate.
Additional evaluation may include repeat PSA testing, urine testing, imaging studies such as an MRI, and/or prostate biopsy, depending on your individual risk factors and test results.
How is an elevated PSA treated?
At the U-M Health Urology clinic, management of an elevated PSA is individualized. Patients considered to be at risk of developing prostate cancer will undergo further diagnostic testing. In the absence of prostate cancer, patients do not need treatment for an elevated PSA.
