Preparing for Your Video Visit

You must be physically located in the State of Michigan at the time of your scheduled Video Visit due to state law and regulations. If you cannot be in Michigan at the time of your appointment, you will be asked to reschedule. To receive the maximum benefit of your Video Visit without delays, please review and follow the below instructions. Video Visit video tutorials:

You will need a strong internet or cellular data connection to participate in a Video Visit. If you are in need of an internet connection, use the State of Michigan Online Map of Free Wi-Fi Hotspots to find a public Wi-Fi hotspot location near you. Failure to prepare for your Video Visit may mean you cannot connect for your appointment.

When your appointment is confirmed

Confirm that you can log in to your MyUofMHealth Patient Portal account and that Zoom is installed on your computer or mobile device 2–3 days before your appointment. Ideally you should do this at least 2–3 days before your appointment, or as soon as possible if you are scheduled for a same-day appointment.

Chromebook: Install Zoom

  • Go to the Google Play Store (click the link, or search for Zoom for Chromebook in the Google Play Store). Click Install and download to your device. NOTE: You do NOT need to set up a Zoom account.
  • Once Zoom for Chromebook has been installed, from the home screen of your device go to Settings. Select Zoom and be sure the microphone and camera permissions are turned on.
  • We strongly encourage users to update their Chrome OS for the best possible experience.
  • Check your device to ensure your webcam and microphone are functioning properly by visiting https://zoom.us/test.

Desktop computer: Install Zoom

  • Open your web browser and go to zoom.us. We recommend Google Chrome or Apple Safari web browsers, if available.
  • Click on the Resources drop down, and select Download Zoom Workplace.
  • Click to download the first option in the list, Zoom Workplace. Follow the on-screen, prompts provided by your web browser to successfully complete the download. NOTE: You do NOT need to set up a Zoom account or sign in.
  • Once Zoom has been downloaded, check your computer to ensure your webcam and microphone are working properly by visiting https://zoom.us/test.

Mobile device: Install Zoom

  • From your smartphone or tablet, go to the app store (Apple App Store or Google Play Store) and search for the Zoom Workplace app. Click Get (Apple devices) or Install (Android devices) and download to your device. NOTE: You do NOT need to set up a Zoom account.
  • Once Zoom has been installed, from the home screen of your device go to Settings. Select Zoom and be sure the microphone and camera permissions are turned on.
  • Check your device to ensure your webcam and microphone are functioning properly by visiting  https://zoom.us/test.

The day of your appointment

You can login to your visit no sooner than 15 minutes prior to the scheduled appointment time. Please allow more time to complete eCheck-In and any required clinic questionnaires in advance of your appointment.

Desktop computer: Log into your Video Visit

  1. Go to MyUofMHealth.org to log into your MyUofMHealth Patient Portal account.
  2. Click the “Visits” icon at the top of the screen.
  3. From the “Visits” icon, select “Appointment and Visits.”
  4. From this screen, locate your scheduled Video Visit and click “eCheck-In.” Watch the video "How to check-in for a Video Visit" for step-by-step instructions.
  5. Review and update the information on each screen. Once the information has been updated or verified as correct, click “This information is correct,” and then click the “Next” to proceed to the next screen. When you have finished, click “Submit.” NOTE: eCheck-In must be completed before the Video Visit can begin. You should allow for extra time to complete this step before your scheduled appointment. Be sure to continue through the prompts until you receive the “Submit” option.
  6. Once eCheck-In is complete, click the “Begin Video Visit” from the Appointment Details screen as shown in the image below. The option to begin the Video Visit will not be available until 15 minutes prior to the appointment.
  7. MyUofMHealth will open Zoom to connect to the Video Visit. Be sure to click “Open Zoom Meetings” if prompted. Wait for your host (your health care provider) to join and start the meeting.
  8. Once the host (your health care provider) joins, select “Join with Video” to turn the camera on so you and your health care provider can see each other.
  9. During the Video Visit, you can control whether your audio (sound) and video (picture) are on by clicking the up arrows next to the microphone and video camera icons at the bottom left of your screen.
  10. You should now be connected with your health care provider. At the end of your Video Visit, select the “Leave” button in the upper right hand corner of the screen.

Mobile device: Log in to your Video Visit

  1. Open the MyUofMHealth app on your smartphone or tablet and log in.
  2. Tap the Appointments icon.
  3. Find your scheduled Video Visit and tap “eCheck-In.” Watch the video "How to check-in for a Video Visit" for step-by-step instructions.
  4. Review and update the information on each screen. Once the information has been updated or verified as correct, click “This information is correct.” Select “Close” to complete eCheck-In. NOTE: eCheck-In must be completed before the Video Visit can begin. You should allow extra time to complete this step before you scheduled appointment. Be sure to continue through all the prompts until you receive a message thanking you for completing eCheck-in.
  5. Once eCheck-In is complete, tap “Begin Visit.” The option to begin the Video Visit will not be available until 15 minutes prior to the appointment. If you attempt to join the video meeting without downloading Zoom, you will be prompted to download the Zoom app. Follow the on-screen prompts to successfully complete the download. If you already have Zoom downloaded on your device, you may still see a screen that appears to be prompting you to download the Zoom app, but below the blue download button you will see the option to select “Launch the meeting.” Select “Launch the meeting.”
  6. Once you are connected to the Video Visit, you may need to wait for the host (your health care provider) to start the meeting.
  7. Once the provider joins, enter your name.
  8. Select “Call via Device Audio” when prompted, and “Join with Video” to turn on the camera and start the Video Visit. NOTE: Do NOT select “Dial in,” or you will leave the Zoom app and your health care provider will not be able to see your video.
  9. During the Video Visit, you can control whether your audio (sound) and video (picture) are on by clicking the up arrows next to the microphone and video camera icons at the bottom left of your screen.
  10. You should now be connected with your health care provider. At the end of your Video Visit, select the “Leave” button in the upper right hand corner of the screen.

Inviting a Guest to Your Video Visit  

You may wish to invite additional family members, foster parents or caregivers to join your Video Visit. There are two ways you can invite a participant to your Video Visit 1. In your MyUofMHealth Patient Portal account before your visit:

  • Select your appointment in your MyUofMHealth Patient Portal
  • Under “Manage who will participate in this video visit” select “View and Invite Participants”
  • Select “Invite a New Guest” and again, select “Invite a New Guest”
  • Complete the form and send the invitation using the button at the bottom of the form
  • Your guest will receive either an email or text message with the link to the visit, depending on your selection. Please remind them to download the Zoom app in advance and not to hit the link before the visit time.
  • Please note that if a visit is rescheduled or changed, you will need to re-send the invitation(s).

2. Within Zoom, once you have started your video visit:

  • Click the “Participants” icon at the bottom of the Zoom wind.
  • Click “Invite” at the bottom of the Participants pan.
  • Click “Copy Invite Link” in the lower left-hand side of the Invite People to Join Meeting window.
  • You can now paste the link in a text message to those who you would like to join the Video Visit if using a smartphone or tablet, or send an email if using a computer or laptop.
  • The additional participant(s) can join the Video Visit by clicking the link. They will be entered into the waiting room.
  • Let your provider know you have invited an additional participant to the visit. The provider will then admit your requested participant to the Video Visit.
