Video Visits allow you to save the time and cost of traveling to see your health care provider in person by giving you access to the same world-class care from University of Michigan Health online, but instead of travelling to the clinic, you’ll communicate with a provider through a video call, using your smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer with a microphone and camera.
What is a Video Visit?
A Video Visit is a scheduled appointment with your health care provider where you connect via the MyUofMHealth Patient Portal. You will be able to see, hear, and speak to your provider and they will be able to see, hear, and speak to you, similar to the experience you might get using Apple FaceTime or Skype calls. Your visit will be just as thorough and personalized as a traditional clinic visit, but without a trip to one of our hospitals or health centers. Most Video Visits are scheduled in advance directly through a specific U-M Health clinic. U-M Health patients also have access to Urgent Care Video Visits, which are self-scheduled, same-day Video Visits available for evaluation of COVID-19 and flu symptoms.
Who can request a Video Visit?
Anyone can request a Video Visit! Contact the clinic you are interested in being seen by, and ask if Video Visits are available. If Video Visits are available for the type of evaluation or care you need, the clinic staff will assist you in scheduling a Video Visit appointment. You must be physically located in the State of Michigan at the time of your scheduled Video Visit due to state law and regulations. If you cannot be in Michigan at the time of your appointment, you will be asked to reschedule. A parent/full legal guardian may need proxy access to the patient’s MyUofMHealth Patient Portal account for some patients under 18, or adult patients with diminished mental capacity. Alternatively, in some pediatric departments, a patient 11–17 years of age will need an independent MyUofMHealth Patient Portal account in order to access a Video Visit. Questions about what type of account access is needed for your Video Visit can be directed to your participating clinic.
In all cases, the patient must be physically present for the Video Visit.
How can I request a Video Visit?
To request a standard Video Visit, call the clinic you are interested in being seen by and ask about scheduling a Video Visit. If the type of evaluation or care you need can be done through a Video Visit, the clinic staff will help you schedule a Video Visit appointment. Urgent Care Video Visits for COVID-19 or flu symptoms can be self-scheduled directly through the MyUofMHealth Patient Portal.
