  • About

Keith Aaronson, MD, PhD, MS, is the Bertram Pitt, MD Collegiate Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, University of Michigan Medical School, the Medical Director of the Cardiac Transplant Service and the Center for Circulatory Support and the Co-Director of the Heart Failure and Transplant Management Program for Michigan Medicine. Dr. Aaronson is actively engaged in clinical practice and clinical research in the areas of heart failure, heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support. His research has focused on improving health, quality of life and economic outcomes in these populations, utilizing methodologies ranging from small to large scale observational analyses, Markov modeling, meta-analyses, and both industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated randomized clinical trials of standard pharmaceutical interventions, alternative medicines, patient education and mechanical circulatory support. Dr. Aaronson has had a particular interest in modeling outcomes in advanced heart failure, heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support to inform appropriate utilization of health resources. He co-developed the first prospectively validated survival model for patients with advanced heart failure, the Heart Failure Survival Score, which remains in use by heart failure specialists worldwide to help select the most appropriate candidates for heart transplantation and other advanced therapies. He was national Co-PI of the completed HeartWare Ventricular Assist Device (HVAD) Bridge to Transplant ADVANCE Trial, the NHLBI-funded REVIVE-IT trial and the ongoing REVIVAL registry. His present research includes investigations of novel devices for percutaneous circulatory support, cardiac remodeling and cardiorenal syndrome.
