**Note: There will be an in-person meeting Thursday, April 4 from 6:30-8 pm in the Cancer Center 1st floor lobby. No concurrent Zoom link will be available for this meeting.
From newly diagnosed to veteran survivors, patients and their caregivers meet for U-M’s Esophagectomy Support Group to share a message of hope for life before and after esophagectomy. The concept of a major surgery such as an esophagectomy can be intimidating and overwhelming. At this monthly meeting, confusion and frustration are met with solid answers, new hope and confidence.
The group of 10-20 meet via Zoom, and a member of the U-M's Thoracic Cancer team leads the conversation, answers questions, and provides detailed medical explanations about esophagectomy. Some examples of the topics of discussion include:
- Will I be able to eat again?
- How many days will I be in the hospital?
- What type of care will I receive while I am in the hospital?
- What can I do to maintain my weight?
- Are these side effects normal?
Often, members of the group will share their story or provide an update on their condition. However, sharing your story is optional, and you are welcome to come to listen and learn. Sharing your personal information is never required.
If you have had or are scheduled to have an esophagectomy, you are encouraged to attend a meeting. We urge you to invite a supportive friend or family member to visit with you. It is often beneficial that they learn more about your condition. When friends or family members are also caregivers, the group support, advice and education help them as well.
The meetings are free and getting started is as simple as coming to a meeting. Call with any questions at 734-936-8857 for the Zoom meeting details.
