Daniel Chang to lead Department of Radiation Oncology at Michigan Medicine

Daniel Chang, M.D., was named chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Michigan Medicine. Chang, who is currently the Sue and Bob McCollum Professor of Radiation Oncology at Stanford University, will begin at U-M on Oct. 1.

Arul Chinnaiyan awarded prestigious Sjöberg Prize for cancer research

Arul M. Chinnaiyan, M.D., Ph.D., was awarded the 2022 Sjöberg Prize by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which also awards Nobel Prizes. Chinnaiyan is being honored for the discovery of recurrent gene fusions in prostate cancer, a groundbreaking finding initially published in 2005 that has led to a better understanding of how prostate cancer develops and improved methods to detect the disease.

Season of Giving: Michigan Medicine hosts new community-wide food drive to help neighbors in need

The season of giving has once again arrived in Michigan. But this one comes amid a surging pandemic, an economic downturn, and a looming deadline for continuation of federal financial relief. All of these have created intense need in communities surrounding Michigan Medicine. In response, the University of Michigan’s academic medical center will launch a third effort to encourage its own team, and the local community, to give food and funds to support Food Gatherers.

Pandemic Must-Haves: PPE and Clean, Sanitized Scrubs & Gowns

Michigan Medicine and two other major health systems have unveiled their $48 million shared laundry facility that is expected to achieve both significant savings from more efficient operations and better meet laundry needs. Located in Detroit, the new eco-friendly facility has the capacity to service 78 million pounds of health care linens – scrubs, bed sheets, pillowcases, blankets, towels and scrubs for inpatient and outpatient use – every year for the health systems combined.

Michigan Medicine is launching a second food and toiletry drive for the community, in partnership with Food Gatherers. The drive will take place between September 8 and 27th online and in person, and is open to all U-M faculty, staff and students, and members of the community who are in a position to give.

Hail to the crafters & makers: U-M adds cloth masks & 3-D printed mask adjusters to list of COVID-19 response needs

As part of its COVID-19 donation drive, Michigan Medicine has started accepting hand-made cloth masks for staff working in non-patient care settings, and 3-D printed “mask adjuster” bands to prevent sore ears among clinical staff. The two new items join the list of other supplies and financial donations being collected to help Michigan Medicine teams and community partners. These include personal protective gear such as masks, gowns and gloves; meals for front-line staff, and non-perishable food and toiletries for Food Gatherers.

U-M continues emergency study of severe seizures

What’s the best way to treat someone who’s stuck in a prolonged, dangerous seizure? Although emergency medical teams use a variety of approaches around the country, they could use better guidance based on research to give patients the best chance of surviving, and reduce brain damage. Now, a study to answer that very question in children is happening at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and other hospitals around the country.
