Mitral valve

The mitral valve separates the left upper chamber (left atrium) and left lower chamber (left ventricle) of the heart. The mitral valve is formed from two downward-facing flaps. When the heart pumps, blood forces the flaps open, and blood flows from the left atrium to the left ventricle. Between heartbeats, the flaps...

Mitral valve prolapse

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a condition that affects the mitral valve between the left upper chamber (left atrium) and left lower chamber (left ventricle) of the heart. Normally the mitral valve closes smoothly after blood flows through it from the upper to the lower chamber. This keeps blood from leaking back into...

Mitral Valve Prolapse

What is mitral valve prolapse? Your mitral valve controls blood flow on the left side of your heart. The valve opens and closes with each heartbeat. It works like a one-way gate, letting blood flow from your upper heart chamber to your lower chamber. When you have mitral valve prolapse (MVP), the valve closes after...

Mitral Valve Prolapse (Holistic)

This common heart condition caused by a valve abnormality can lead to occasional breathing problems. According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may be helpful. Shake on the salt Unless otherwise instructed by your doctor, try more salt in your diet to help prevent symptoms associated with...

Mitral Valve Regurgitation

What is mitral valve regurgitation? Mitral valve regurgitation is a problem that happens when the mitral valve does not close tightly enough. The closed valve lets blood leak (regurgitate) from the lower chamber of the heart back into the upper chamber. Your heart has to work harder to pump this extra blood. Primary...

Mitral valve regurgitation

Mitral valve regurgitation (MR) is the leaking or backflow of blood through the valve between the upper left heart chamber (atrium) and the lower left heart chamber (ventricle). If serious, this condition can lead to a backup of blood in the left atrium and the lungs, cause enlargement of and damage to the left...

Mitral valve regurgitation

Mitral valve regurgitation happens when the mitral valve does not close tightly enough after blood flows through the valve into the lower chamber of the heart. This makes a small opening in the valve even when the valve is closed. This opening can let blood leak (regurgitate) back into the upper chamber of the heart.

Mitral Valve Regurgitation: Repair or Replace the Valve?

You can work with your doctor to decide whether you want to have your mitral valve repaired or replaced to treat chronic mitral valve regurgitation. Many things play a role in this decision. These things include: The cause of the regurgitation. If you have symptoms. If you have other health problems. How severe the...

Mitral Valve Repair Surgery

Mitral valve repair is typically done during an open-heart surgery. It repairs a mitral valve that is not working as it should. The mitral valve opens and closes to keep blood flowing in the proper direction through your heart. If the mitral valve doesn't close properly, it's called mitral valve regurgitation. If the...

Mitral valve replacement surgery

Mitral valve replacement surgery is typically an open-heart procedure. The damaged heart valve is removed and replaced with a new valve. There are two types of replacement valve: a mechanical heart valve made from plastic or metal or a bioprosthetic heart valve made from animal tissue.

Mitral Valve Replacement Surgery

Mitral valve replacement is most often done as an open-heart surgery. Minimally invasive types of surgery may be another option. The damaged mitral valve is removed and replaced with a new heart valve. The damaged valve is cut out. Then the new valve is sewn in place. The new valve may be mechanical or made of animal...

Mitral valve stenosis

Mitral valve stenosis is a heart disease in which the mitral valve—which regulates blood flow on the left side of the heart—fails to open as wide as it should. Although it has no immediate effect on health, eventually mitral valve stenosis can cause the left atrium to work harder to pump blood through the narrowed...

Mitral Valve Stenosis

What is mitral valve stenosis? Mitral valve stenosis is a heart problem in which the mitral valve becomes stiff and doesn't open as wide as it should. This forces your heart to work harder to pump blood through the valve, which can weaken the heart and cause other problems. What causes it? Nearly all cases of mitral...
