What is sodium zirconium cyclosilicate?
Sodium zirconium cyclosilicate is used to treat hyperkalemia (high levels of potassium in the blood) in adults.
Sodium zirconium cyclosilicate works directly in the intestines and is not absorbed into your bloodstream.
Sodium zirconium cyclosilicate may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking sodium zirconium cyclosilicate?
Tell your doctor if you have ever had:
- slow digestion;
- a bowel obstruction or severe constipation;
- heart problems; or
- if you are on a low-salt diet.
Because this medicine is not absorbed into the bloodstream, it is not expected to be harmful during pregnancy or while nursing a baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
How should I take sodium zirconium cyclosilicate?
Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose. Use the medicine exactly as directed.
Read and carefully follow any Instructions for Use provided with your medicine. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you do not understand these instructions.
You will need medical tests to help your doctor determine how long to treat you with sodium zirconium cyclosilicate.
Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
Sodium zirconium cyclosilicate can make it harder for your body to absorb other medicines you take by mouth. If you take any other medicines, take them 2 hours before or 2 hours after you take sodium zirconium cyclosilicate.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Use the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not use two doses at one time.

What should I avoid while taking sodium zirconium cyclosilicate?
Follow your doctor's instructions about any restrictions on food, beverages, or activity.
What are the possible side effects of sodium zirconium cyclosilicate?
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
This medicine contains sodium and may cause swelling or rapid weight gain.
