What is iron protein succinylate?
Iron protein succinylate is a form of the mineral iron. Iron is important for many functions in the body, especially for the transport of oxygen in the blood.
Iron protein succinylate is used to treat iron deficiency anemia (a lack of red blood cells caused by having too little iron in the body).
Iron protein succinylate may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking iron protein succinylate?
You should not use this medicine without medical advice.
Ask a doctor or pharmacist if this medicine is safe to use if you have ever had:
- iron overload syndrome; or
- a red blood cell disorder such as thalassemia (lack of hemoglobin).
Do not give this medicine to a child without medical advice.
Ask a doctor before using this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
How should I take iron protein succinylate?
Use exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor.
Taking iron protein succinylate long-term or at high doses can cause excess iron to build-up in the body.
Shake the oral suspension (liquid) before you measure a dose. Use the dosing syringe provided, or use a medicine dose-measuring device (not a kitchen spoon).
You may take this medicine with food.
If desired, mix iron protein succinylate with water or fruit juice. Use a straw to drink the mixture, to avoid getting this medicine on your teeth.
When giving this medicine to a baby, you may mix the liquid with a small amount of infant formula for bottle-feeding.
Take your doses at regular intervals to keep a steady amount of iron in your body at all times.
Liquid iron medicine can cause temporary staining of your teeth. You may be able to reduce staining by brushing your teeth with baking soda. Ask your doctor about how to treat tooth stains in a child.
You will need frequent medical tests.
It may take up to 3 to 6 months before you receive the full benefit of taking iron protein succinylate. Your doctor will determine how long to treat you with this medicine.
Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
Do not stop taking this medicine without your doctor's advice.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at one time.
What happens if I overdose?
Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222. An accidental iron overdose can be fatal to a child younger than 6 years old.
What should I avoid while taking iron protein succinylate?
Do not share this medicine with another person.
Do not take any vitamin or mineral supplements that your doctor has not prescribed or recommended.
What are the possible side effects of iron protein succinylate?
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Call your doctor at once if you have:
- unusual weakness, tiredness, or drowsiness;
- fast, slow, or irregular heart rate;
- bloody or black stools;
- pale or clammy skin;
- blue discoloration of your lips, nails, or the palms of your hands;
- a seizure;
- stomach pain, vomiting; or
- trouble swallowing.
Common side effects may include:
- indigestion, nausea, vomiting;
- diarrhea; or
- constipation.
This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.
What other drugs will affect iron protein succinylate?
If you take an antacid, take your iron protein succinylate dose 2 hours before you take the antacid.
Other drugs may affect iron protein succinylate, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell your doctor about all your current medicines and any medicine you start or stop using.
