Healthy Weight: When Success Slows Down

Healthy Weight: When Success Slows Down (00:02:16)

[Woman 1] "I was losing weight steadily for a while.

And then the scale just stopped moving.

My doctor told me that a plateau is totally normal and that my goal for now could be to see if I can maintain my current weight.

She said it'd be a good idea to take 3 to 6 months to just practice staying at this weight because maintenance is something I'll have to do no matter where I end up.

My friends say I look great ...

so I really do need to remember how far I've come."

For some people, a shift in focus ... from weight loss to weight maintenance ...

is key to continued success.

For others, the key may be a shift in your mind-set.

[Man 1] "I love sweets so I struggle with things like cookies in the break room, or saying 'no' to a piece of birthday cake.

But I'm trying something new.

Instead of saying to myself, 'I have to say "no" to that cookie,' I can say, 'I'm giving myself permission to do what I know I want ...

to reach a healthy weight.' Saying 'yes' to me ... not the cookies ... makes me feel good, instead of bad or guilty.

After all, what do I really want ... cookies ... or the feeling that I'm in control?"

Maybe that could work for you ...

or maybe you could try setting a new goal that better fits you ...

and where you're at.

[Woman 2] "They changed me to the night shift at work ...

so my schedule is totally crazy and I'm out of my normal, healthy routine.

I'm back to my old habits of snacking from the vending machine at work and telling myself I need sleep more than exercise.

I know I need to get a new plan that works with my new schedule, but it feels too hard right now.

A co-worker suggested we promise to help each other stay away from the vending machines.

We text each other when we have the urge ... I think it's working."

Think about why you started this journey ... and what's getting in your way now.

Where is it that you really want to be ...

and what do you need to change to get there ... your mind-set or your goals?
