Leaking urine ... what doctors call urinary incontinence ... is very common, especially as we get older.
It has lots of possible causes ... like weight gain, surgery, childbirth, and infections.
There are actually different types of incontinence that can cause slightly different symptoms.
One type makes it hard to get to the toilet in time ...
another can cause you to leak when you cough, laugh, or do other things that put pressure on your bladder.
Some people have both types.
[Woman's Voice] I love to laugh ... but I try not to ... because if I do, I wet myself.
Same thing if I sneeze.
I even had to quit my aerobics class because I'd leak every time.
It's not much, really ... a panty liner usually catches it all ... but still, it's embarrassing.
Guess I'll have to get used to that ... it's just part of aging, right?
That's a common mistake.
Sure, plenty of people leak as they get older ...
but that doesn't mean you have to put up with it.
Incontinence can be treated.
[Man's Voice] You don't want to be between me and the bathroom when the urge strikes ... because I'll run you down.
If I don't get there in time ... well, let's just say it's a mess.
I'm dashing to the bathroom every couple of hours ...
so I never get a good night's sleep.
But I wouldn't be comfortable talking to my doctor about it.
Doctors are used to talking about incontinence ... and they can offer good and ...
in some cases ... simple treatments that can make a big difference.
If you had a leaky faucet, you might try to fix it yourself.
But for a tougher problem, you'd call an expert, wouldn't you?
If you have a leaky bladder, call your doctor ... soon.
Why put up with it any longer than you have to?
