Poison Ivy, Oak, or Sumac: What to Do First

Poison Ivy, Oak, or Sumac: What to Do First (00:01:03)
Video Transcript

Poison ivy, oak, and sumac plants have an oil that causes a nasty, itchy rash.

But you might be able to avoid the rash if you wash your skin with lots of water and mild soap.

And the sooner you wash, the better.

Just don't scrub too hard or you'll hurt your skin.

Clean under your nails too, because the oil can hide there.

And be sure to rinse well.

Now, that sneaky oil can also get on your clothes, camping gear, gardening tools, even your pet.

And it can stay there for months.

So wear vinyl or cotton gloves when you handle anything that might have the oil on it.

Wash clothes in hot water.

Clean your shoes, tools, or other things with lots of soap and water.

And give your pet a bath.

If you act fast and wash everything well, you'll have the best chance of stopping that itchy rash before it starts.
