Taking oxygen along when you travel doesn't have to slow you down.

With a little planning, you can go anywhere.

Now, here are a few tips to help you get on board [sound of ship's horn].

First, get a medical release from your doctor that says it's safe for you to travel.

And be sure you have a prescription that lists the flow rate and amount of oxygen you use.

Keep both of these things with you, no matter how you travel.

If you're flying, [sound of a plane taking off] check with your airline about their requirements, and any extra charges for supplying oxygen.

You may need a travel companion, and you'll have to use an oxygen concentrator.

So be sure you know which models are allowed, what kind of battery you'll need, and how to deal with any alarms on your device.

If you plan to bring tanks, ask the airlines about rules for packing them.

Also, ask what to do if you have a layover.

If you'll need oxygen during a layover, you'll need to arrange for a supplier to come to the airport.

Now, if you're taking a cruise, [sound of ship's horn] about 3 weeks before you go, let the cruise line know about your oxygen needs.

You can take a concentrator and your own tanks, or you can arrange to have oxygen delivered to the ship before it leaves.

You need to make sure you'll have enough oxygen for the whole cruise, including time onshore.

And finally, if you travel by train or bus, [sound of a train] check with them ahead of time and let them know you'll be traveling with oxygen.

You can take your own tanks or a concentrator, but there may be weight limits.

Find out which cities the train or bus stops in, and make arrangements to get your tank refilled if you'll need it.

Because electricity may not be available, be sure you have a backup battery for your concentrator.

And if you go by train, check to see if smoking is allowed.

If so, ask for a nonsmoking car.

Okay, now that you know how to plan for a trip, you're ready to see the world.
