Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology

Since the early 1990s, the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital has had a dedicated clinic for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology. Our multidisciplinary team of physicians and nurses are committed to providing family-centered care with compassion and respect. We work to develop a plan of care that meets the needs of each patient and her family.

We evaluate and treat patients from infancy and childhood through adolescence and young adulthood, giving special consideration to the physical and emotional needs of young women, and providing support in their transition from pediatric care to gynecologic care.

Our group evaluates and treats the entire scope of gynecological issues, including:

  • Obstructive anomalies of the female reproductive system, such imperforate hymen (membrane covers vaginal opening) or transverse vaginal septum (fibrous tissue that blocks the vagina)
  • Anomalies of the uterus
  • Reconstructive surgery, including evaluation and counseling, often in concert with Pediatric Urology and/or Pediatric Surgery
  • Ovarian cysts and other pelvic masses
  • Irregular menstrual bleeding in teenagers
  • Menstrual issues due to diseases that may impact periods, such as bleeding disorders
  • No menstrual periods ever or for prolonged periods of time (amenorrhea)
  • Vulvar abnormalities, including lichen sclerosus (a painful skin condition), labial agglutination (part of the labia sticks together) and condyloma (genital warts)
  • Vaginal discharge and infections
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Teenagers with complicated family-planning needs
  • Disorders of sexual differentiation (genitalia does not clearly identify a child as a girl or a boy), including Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome (can include the absence of the upper vagina as well as the uterus) and androgen insensitivity syndrome (physical characteristics of a girl with genetic makeup of a boy)

While we offer comprehensive diagnostics and the latest therapeutic services for conditions affecting the pediatric and adolescent female reproductive system, we also offer first-time gynecologic examination and Pap smear consultation for young women.

As many of the diseases we treat require a coordinated approach, we work closely with other pediatric services, such as endocrinology, dermatology, urology and other specialties. Patients benefit from access to our social worker and specialized nursing staff, as well as sex therapists trained to work with children and adolescents.

Our clinics are located at Mott Children's Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women's Hospital, the Brighton Center for Specialty Care and the West Ann Arbor Health Center.
